‘Permit me to introduce myself…’: the swinging soul jazz of Mr Oscar Brown Jr

16 Jan

The hep Sammy Davis Jr – was there ever a more perfect start to a song?

Oscar Brown Jr was a true original and genuine renaissance man: poet, broadcaster, political activist (running for Congress twice!), actor, and of course he was a great jazz singer.  He started his career off by recording ‘Sin and Soul’ (one of the great vocal jazz albums), and thereafter made a series of just very good albums.  Songs about animals, political songs, funny voices…Oscar Brown Jr did them all with aplomb and effortless cool.  And he was a huge star in the early 60s, starring on Broadway and with TV specials to his name, only to drop from sight a few years later.  When kids say ‘Oscar Brown who?’, put this honey on and watch them start to click their fingers.  Sometime the originals are the best…
